Dietzillas…

Well it’s almost half-way into the month, and slowly my diet is starting to come right. With all the stress, deadlines and pure laziness of the past month or two I was slipping back into bad habits, not exercising much at all and was just starting to feel less than good. I began to be more careful about what I ate towards the end of December but then it was Christmas and the holidays, which was of course not the … Read More »

Juicing Out…

I know I go about my smoothie maker all the time, but I am just totally loving this awesome machine! I’ve always wanted one but like many things, I just never got around to getting one. When Christmas came along, and we did our annual family ‘secret santa’ thing (instead of getting loads of small and often arb things for the entire family, a few years ago we decided to rather get decent present for just one person, and we … Read More »

Emerging Tea Addict

One of the most surprising things to happen so far in this past week or two has been my rather painless parting from coffee. I’m not quite sure how it happened, last year I was knocking that stuff back far too often, and now I just don’t even think a cappuccino will cut it anymore. In Piketberg my sister uses a chicory-coffee blend that she makes on the gas stove, and we only had once a day, so perhaps a … Read More »

2010: This is it!

Just a few more months to go… It seemed like it would never get here, but at last 2010 is upon us. I am feeling so optimistic and excited about the year ahead it’s insane, and with so much to look forward to, it just HAS to be a good one! After a good few days away in Piketberg, high up on the mountains away from everything; relaxing, eating, napping, reading, missioning through forests, swimming in gorgeous jacaranda-filled pools, and … Read More »

Fabulous Friday

Sonic as a kitten, unrelated to anything but oh so cute! After a rather fraught night of tossing and turning and trying to process eleventy million things at once, I woke up this morning (after missing my alarm a few times) feeling that something was a bit different. First, I could actually breath properly for the first time in well over a week, and also, I felt much calmer. And after a good and productive day, I’m feeling even better. … Read More »

I’m Loving… Pilates

Working that core… So I had my second Pilates class this evening, and I have to admit that I’m really enjoying it. It’s totally different to all the training I’ve done before, from the hard full contact Muaythai to running, gym and even Kung Fu. The evening class is a bit fuller and it’s a bit harder to keep up as the instructor goes quite quickly, but it just feels like I’ve been doing it for ages, and I love … Read More »

The “1-ingredient” rule for healthy eating

I got this email the other day which really is worth sharing, makes us remember how important whole food is, and something to think about next time you’re mindlessly shoving a trolley around P ‘n P! Now here’s some simple advice that makes complete sense… A common theme I’ve noticed lately with people that think they are eating healthy is that they’re still eating too much processed foods, but being duped by clever food labels into believing that the processed … Read More »

Moderation & Flexibility = Key

One of the biggest reasons for fitness programs and diets to fail is lack of flexibility. So often, rigid diets which restrict us cause us to lose heart and lapse, never to try again. Fitness programs get too much, and we give up. So, how do we make health and fitness a lifestyle rather than a phase? By remembering how important moderation and flexibility are, that’s how. I have had times of non-negotiable dieting and training, and I have kept … Read More »

Spicing Things Up

I am a late bloomer when it comes to chili. My sister used to make Thai green curries, and even her mild ones were too much for me. Slowly though, I started developing a love for spiciness, and my tolerance starting growing. Lately I’ve started adding spices – especially chili – to just about everything. In salads and stews, and those delicious spiced chickpeas… somehow loads of chili and spices and garlic makes arb food divine. Diet-wise, chili is a … Read More »

Detox Weekends: Good

Calm, wonderful calm… Well, I managed to survive a weekend without going out, without bread (well, except for one minor lapse – damn jalapeno sub!), without chocolate, without junk (well other than the small packet of Sun Bites)… and without exercise come to think of it, oops. What I did have was loads of delicious fresh fruit, yummy salads, rice bowls, spiced chickpeas, water, coffee (just instant though!), rest, Dexter and even an unexpected visit from my sister. I lapsed … Read More »
