what's lurve got to do with it...

So as some of you lucky ones on the mailing list for ‘daily joke via dating buzz’ know, my online dating experiment has come to a very brief end after just over a week. While I still think that it offers a way for some people to connect, it’s just not for everyone, and mostly it just put me even more off the whole ‘commitment’ thing.

Some of my main thoughts…

* Getting endless emails (often from the same dudes, even after their first 3 were ignored) got a bit much.
* The one or two vaguely interesting ones still made me suspicious and wary.
* The older age groups seem to be the most active, showing that it’s a great option for divorcees and widows/widowers.
* Sadly however, most of the 40-50 year old men were more interested in the younger women – go figure.
* Most of the people on these sites are looking for ‘the one’ or ‘love’ or other such heaviness, and one guy even asked if I would consider relocating… to Argentina. Heavy stuff.
* The messages were mostly hilarious, and sometimes a bit sad, a lot desperate, sometimes pushy and in one or two cases, a tiny bit scary.

Putting myself there on the interwebz was quite hectic; realising that Dating Buzz showcase profiles on their ads was even more so. Still, I don’t regret it at all – it was a good confidence boost, I had some laughs, I even made a friend or two, and now I know that a) online dating isn’t for me, b) I am in now way able to get involved, c) I don’t really know what I want and d) I know what I *don’t* want.

In the interests of being single and thirty, flirty and thriving, what I liked about this was seeing what it was about. I’m keen to see what Speed Date is like too, what the hell! It’s all in the name of curiosity and fun, and it can only help from a client/research perspective too.

But aside from the curiosity factor, and the possibility of a random date or two (especially if it involves free bubbly), this little experiment has been a positive affirmation that I am actually very content to stay single at this point. With Roxb taking up most of my time and energy, I just need to focus on world domination and building my empire.

Besides, tourist season is just warming up here in Cape Town – it’s positively crazy to get tied down during summer and miss out on all of that.

hot werewolf alcides: see you again season four...

I’m a bit bleary-eyed this morning after a late one last night – went to see the always-brilliant Blade at the Graca Comedy Competition @ Zula to watch him in the finals… and was so, so proud when he won with a tie! Every time we see the dude, he just gets better and better and it’s so awesome that we can say “I knew him back when…”.

After I got home, I saw that the True Blood 3 finale I have been awaiting for like, weeks was finally up, so that meant I had to stream it. To stay awake, watched some old horror movies (I am weird like that, don’t judge). Eventually I was too tired to stay up, so woke up early this morning to watch. I was not all that impressed overall, just felt like too many loose ends (and not enough topless hot vamps or sexy werewolves) but anyway – kinda over vampires for a while now. Bring on Gossip Girl 4 and Dexter 5 – time for some human shiz!

When I checked my Twitter stream this morning I had a good laugh at an article via @HeatSouthAfrica that stated that Colin Firth had won a Britain’s Best-Looking Man poll. While I like Mark Darcy as much as the next chick, really wouldn’t go that far to call him Britain’s hottest… especially not when he shares a country with the likes of David Beckham. Also, he beat out Clive Owen, and that was just wrong. Check out the results over here to see who else made the top 5 list.

P.S. My kitten spent the night at the vet in preparation for his snip today… my flat feels very weird and quiet without him, poor bugger will be home this afternoon though!

I can’t help thinking that Chace Crawford manages to get away with the whole scruffy beard vibe, without looking like he’s playing dress up in a school play. This picture did make me laugh however – love how these guys want to be taken all seriaas like.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think Zak should stick to the perfectly in place look and lose the ratty pornstache.

In the show, Damon is this uber hot badass vampire who is the brother of this geeky Dawson’s Creek type vampire. The geeky one is kinda arb and annoying, you end up wishing someone would accidentally on purpose splash some holy water on him, or steal his ‘sunlight protector’ ring (yes, new age vampires have such things, who knew!) or just stake him in the heart or something, but Damon is pretty cool.

Look at that gorgeous face – he is just adorable! Lance plays midfield, and wears the #7 top. At 25 he’s just a baby, but having been discovered by former Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter in 2004 at the age of just 18, he’s had plenty of experience. Watch him because… that smile has dimples, I am sure of it!

MacBeth Sibaya – #6

MacBeth is now my new favourite name, I wish I had thought of that when I got my kitten! Also, he has killer dreads and a cool attitude. MacBeth made his debut for for the national team nine years ago in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Malawi. Watch him because… he looks like he would be fun to party with!

Teko Modise – #11

Ok, maybe he’s not quite a Ronaldo or the French god… but our boy Teko is one of Bafana’s hottest players, and he is going to be one to watch throughout the World Cup. Despite falling out of grace during the Confed Cup, he is still a brilliant player, and hopefully the SWC will bring him back to glory once again! Watch him because… he is one of the top players on the squad.

Matthew Booth – #14

There’s no way you will miss this defender on the field – firstly, he’s the only white guy on the team, secondly he’s huge and thirdly, he plays defense. Much-loved by every South African, Booth is the boy wonder who is bringing the team much-needed energy and oomph. Watch him because… he’s going to stop the other guys from scoring!

Anele Ngongca – #5

Another defender, Anele is one of the team’s important players – keeping the other team from scoring and tackling to the death. At only 22, he is a bit of a ‘mystery man’ but has slowly shown his potential to be a national team gem with talent and composure. Watch him because… he’s going to kick ass and take names (and also, he looks like Simon Webb from Blue, kinda, hehe).

I am quite a soccer fan, and compared to almost all other sports, soccer is one of the few games that I can watch on my own easily. I love the game for many reasons… the excitement, fast-paced action, intense battles to defend and score… and let’s be honest, the players. To make things easier for all the ladies out there who are wondering which teams to watch, I have compiled this handy World Cup 2010 Guide.

Italy: Fabio Cannavaro

One of soccer’s biggest stars, and former Man U secret weapon, this Real Madrid hottie needs no introduction. Sexy, charismatic and a dream to watch on the field, he will be owning it for Portugal in a big way! Things to say to Ronaldo: “Perdi meu urso de peluche, dormirá comigo esta noite?” (I lost my teddy bear, will you sleep with me tonight?)

USA: Benny Feilhaber

Born in Brazil, Benny moved to the US when he was six. A whizz on the field, he is also rather easy on the eye (what is it with boys from Brazil, sheesh!). He plays midfielder, both for the US national team and some arb Danish team. Things to say to Benny: “….” (I don’t you about you, but I would just stare mindlessly, hehe).

France: Yoann Gourcuff

Seriously?! This French god will be pulling me to every game that France plays, even if they totally suck! I can’t even begin to try and pronounce his name but my dodgy French *may* help a teeny bit, haha. Things to say to Yoann: “Me prendre avec vous, s’il vous plaît!” (take me with you, please!)

Serbia: Zoran Toši?

Well now, I would totally not say no to being a mail order bride for this one. At only 22 years old, this rising Man U star is also quite a valuable addition to the Serbia team. What we need to know though is that he plays left wing, and he’s hot with a silent J. Things to say to Zoran: “…” (translation tool broke, clearly the things I want to say are not suitable for public opinion, hehe)

South Korea: Lee Chung Yong

He’s hot, he’s Asian and he’s only 21. Bolton’s South Korean midfielder is turning a lot of heads, both on and off the field. Hard to believe how young he is, but with that cool composition, he will be one to watch. Things to say to Lee: “pick me, pick me!”.

Girl crush on Serena aka Blake Lively (and teeny on one Blair aka Leighton Meister) aside, the three main dudes from the show are also pretty easy on the eye. It’s hard to pick favourites so early into the show, but currently I rate them as follows:

1. Nate Archibald – Chace Crawford

The Pretty Boy

Gosh but he is pretty. My high school boyfriend was pretty like that, with the perfect brows, big blue eyes and chiseled cheekbones. Granted, he was also a bit of a stuffed up druggie at the time, but still – he was a pretty boy. Nate is kinda interesting, nice guy type in a not so annoying way, and is also one of most ‘stand up’ dudes on the show. I heart him mostly because of those purty, purty eyes though. Just saying.

2. Chuck Bass – Ed Westwick

Coming a very close second is the resident bad boy, Chuck Bass. One of my favourite Chuck moments was early onto the first season when they are all giving motivations as to why they should be accepted into their college of choice. Everyone gives rousing speeches about their capabilities and such, except for Chuck, who gives that pout, raises and eyebrow and says, “I’m Chuck Bass”. Bad boys are always fun to watch, without fail.

3. Dan Humphrey – Penn Badgley

Dan aka Lonely Boy started off being cool and interesting, but is already starting to become a bit annoying. I have it on good authority (thanks Brazen) that he gets even more irritating, but for now he’s at least cute enough to watch without too much hassle.

~ Jay-z – On To The Next One

I got hold of Blueprint 3 today (yes, only now) and I’ve been playing it to death. Being a huge fan already, I’ve loved Jay-z long time. From the So Ghetto days and the Hard Knock Life early days, this dude just brings it every single time. Of all the songs on the album, this is my favourite. Call it an anthem for the single types on the road to success and self-actualization. Call it another song about cars, chicks and money. Call it what you want.

I’m calling it awesome, and I’m claiming it as a theme song for Marvelous March.

When it works…

The only time a prop such as a cute dog will work is if the guy is also cute or at least appealing. Puppies are a natural people magnet as they are, and most likely a girl will stop to pet the puppy regardless of what the owner looks like. However, that will be the end of that little encounter unless the guy has something more to keep her there. Puppies are basically a natural opener, in other words. Confidence is therefore a key part of a prop’s success, as is a bit of charm and minimal game strategy. If you happen to own a dog, then it could easily work – if you have to borrow one to pick up chicks, you have missed the point.

Getting it right

Of course, cute guys with cute puppies will also be magnets for old ladies, children, cougars, MILFS and just about any random member of the public, as will not-so-cute guys with cute puppies. C’est la vie, it goes with the territory.

When it doesn’t quite work…

Of course, not all guys with dogs will get attention. I grew up being a little wary of big dogs, and while I am happy to get jumped on and licked by friendly, safe-looking dogs, I will avoid big and scary-looking dogs, regardless of what the owner looks like. Also, some guys with dogs may be scary-looking themselves. Whatever the case, I don’t want to get bitten by the dog or its owner, just not worth the hassle.

Getting it wrong

Also, guys who have their Facebook profile pic of them and their dog make me a bit suspicious. True story, some guys take the props thing to a whole new level, and while I’m sure Marley and you are awesome, for all I know you borrowed the pooch for that perfect Kodak moment.

When it works really, really well…

If you’re going to get a prop, get a cool prop that kicks butt. I once knew a guy who had a crow, it would fly next to him and sleep on his windowsill and sit on his shoulder and eat cat food out of those Whiskers sachets. Aside from the fact that it could easily have pecked his eyes out, it was pretty awesome. Iguanas, cats, ferrets and eels are also good. Of course, you can’t really take your eel for a walk, but you will more than redeem yourself when you feed it bloodworms and she gasps in horror and awe.

Getting it totally right

Bunnies are a tough one though. Manly men could probably get away with it, metrosexuals maybe not so much. If your rabbit is of the manic, wire-eating variety, it might give some street cred, I dunno.

A final note on props…

Props like this are accidental, an added benefit of owning a cool pet. Women who only go for a guy because of his adorable puppy are obviously pretty shallow, and guys who go out and buy an animal for the sake of it are *this* close to being as bad as Wedding Crashers and Hugh Grant in About a Boy. Besides this, many cute guys with cute pets have cute girlfriends or wives too.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t change the fact that women will ALWAYS swoon over hot guys and baby animals. It’s genetic, or something.
