soul asylum - yet another 90's WIN

As a grunge loving teenager in the 90’s, Soul Asylum has been one of my favourite bands for half my life. Misery was an anthem back then, but it was Runaway Train that summed up all the angst, talent and awesomeness of that decade for me. The song has remained one of my all-time favourites all this time, not least because it has a real purpose and message. Seeing as how today is Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy’s birthday, I thought that it would be fitting to play out with this legendary classic… enjoy!

While I am ever so slightly fragile today and only actually got out of bed somewhere around 2pm or so, I am feeling so happy and spoilt! I really had the most amazing birthday every yesterday, and from the non-stop texts, IM’s, emails, Facebook messages, tweets and phone calls to the awesome presents, Patron, hugs and attention, I am feeling so blessed to have such fabulous people in my life. Thirty, flirty and thriving begins, and with such a rad kick off, it can only be an awesome year ahead.

Because I’m feeling too brain dead and lazy to write much, will post some of my favourite photos from the birthday weekend instead…

Twin Peaks: the good years

When I was like eleven or twelve, Twin Peaks and Cop Dale Cooper were quite honestly the coolest thing since Benetton Barbie. My cousin and I were complete addicts, and our idea of the perfect man back in those prepubescent days was Kyle MacLachlan and hot cops in general.

Showgirls: the bad decision

Sure he bombed in Showgirls, but he bombed in a cool, spectacularly bad way. The remote light up palm trees and swimming pool scene will always go down as the most hilarious and awful love scene ever, that has to count for something right?

Desperate Housewives: the return to tv

Then came Desperate Housewives, and we got to see Kyle on television again, this time as creepy but suave Orson Hodge, the man who managed to win Bree over. And maybe kill off a few people, but that aside, he wasn’t that bad really.

I honestly don’t know if there was much else in between Show Girls and Desperate Housewives, and to be quite frank I don’t really think it matters much. Those three roles will always be what I remember, and today on his 51st birthday, those are the roles I want to remember.

It never really did get much better than Twin Peaks though. Sad but true.

The ever-divine Viggo Mortensen turns 51 today, and I swear the man just doesn’t lose his appeal. I’m a huge fan, even when he plays a baddy opposite the dreadful Gwyneth Paltrow (can’t even remember that movie, had Michael Douglas too?) – the man is just hot.

Anyone who has ever listened to Leonard Cohen will understand what I mean when I say the man is a genius poet. I grew up with his sad, beautiful and intense songs – from Suzanne to Chelsea Hotel, So Long Maryanne and many others, but my favourite is Hallelujah. Killing it

God, I can’t believe I missed this, but yesterday was Wenty’s 37th birthday. I could have chosen a picture that showed his beeootiful eyes, but I prefer him hardcore and badass so opted on this one instead.

I’ve said this countless time, but (most) men seem to improve with age. Wenty just seems to get hotter, it’s awesome.

Awesome, just awesome

Ok, I’m a day late, but I got very excited when I saw that yesterday was the birthday of the incredibly awesome actor that brings us the best show in the world, aka Michael C Hall from Dexter.

Dexter totally exceeded all expectations and is now officially my all time favourite series ever. Too bad season 4 is fairly far away, but until then I guess I can re-watch seasons 1 – 3 again when I need a dose of serial killer humour.

Happy 38th birthday Michael C Hall, and hope you’re happy with your sister… I mean wife, who plays your sister on the show.

P.S. Just proves once again that men like this improve with age… nice.

His hat is like a shark’s fin

Now that makes me feel better still – turns out today is LL Cool J’s 41st birthday! That man is a legend of note, from his cheesy beginnings with classics like I’m Bad, to his epic acting that gives every movie a whole new vibe.

My favourite LL movie has got to be Deep Blue Sea, which remains my favourite movie and has everything from manic sharks to Thomas Jane, ridiculous plot twists and LL Cool J with a parrot. Priceless stuff, and the music video is just the best thing ever…
