Emo cats, baby cats, memory books and family

chilling at the P-berg hotel

It’s been quite an exhausting but rewarding weekend. On Saturday morning we set off for Piketberg, first making a stop at the divine retro hotel that my sister’s housemate’s parents have taken over. A drink or two and a first glimpse of the utterly ridiculous 3 week old kitten my sister is raising, and we were ready to head off to the farm to collect her things for the weekend, and to kidnap Sonic the emo cat.

is this insane or what?!

Setting off back to Cape Town, we had one tiny black and white cat angrily demanding more food from his bottle, and another black and white cat making the occasional pitiful meow from his cat basket in the back. He kept his eyes on me the whole journey, and even managed a purr or two.

Sonic comes home at last

When we got back to my flat, we got Sonic settled in my bedroom, Jasper had his first (brief) encounter – which did not go that well, Jasper did the whole stiff legs and fuzzy tail thing, Sonic responded with a hiss. Jasper soon calmed down though, and we let Sonic chill in peace in my room. He slept in my bed last night, while Jasper slept with my sister in the lounge.

Oblivious darling Jasper

Sunday saw me up at the crack of dawn, missioning to Gardens Centre to try and return a top I had gotten earlier in the month from Truworths. You would think they would think of having petty cash, but they obviously don’t see things that way. After being told to come back in an hour, I spent some highly entertaining time at Creme Cafe having a coffee or two, and then on getting back I was told that they still had no cash. Meh.

My mom's gorgeous garden

A wonderful family get together for my sister was just what I needed to restore my zen – it’s always awesome to spend time with my gran, aunt, cousins and my cousin’s adorable baby, and with plenty of wine, food, cake and laughs, the only thing that topped an already great day was my mom presenting my sister and I with photo memory books.

Memory books: too touching for words!

I wanted to cry when I read mine. Starting from my day of birth, the book has photographs and stories for every phase thereafter, with my mom’s messages and memories alongside each precious picture. Seeing the ones of me and my cousin, and me doing my first piano recital, ballet pictures, teenaged pictures, baby pics, pictures of family, cats, friends… every moment, caught in a beautiful hardcover book with a cover and everything. I was moved beyond belief, thank you mom!

Seriously, is being this insanely cute even legal??

Now we’re home at last, the baby kitten is asleep in his box, Jasper is fairly chilled and we may even let Sonic out for a bit. Tequila sunrise on hand, Crouching Tiger on TV, leftovers for supper… time to wind down the weekend and prepare for the Monday ahead.

Happiness all round!
