I am the furthest thing from a wine snob, and in fact I will drink pretty much any wine if I like it – boxed, screw top or otherwise. I love expensive fine wines as much as I love budget ‘to go’ wines, and even with a fair (if basic) knowledge on wine, I still prefer to take it all at face value. Simply put, I buy wine solely to enjoy it. I seldom manage to keep much of a collection, and I quite honestly don’t care about awards or accolades.
With that in mind, the wine I tend to favour the most lately is the el cheapo Woolies wine collection. The reason for this is simple, firstly Woolworths is where I often shop, secondly the wines are ridiculously affordable and finally, they are actually pretty darn good.
Some of the best varietals in the Woolworths collection include the following:

1. Zesty White
—————–
Price: R22.95
This is one of my favourite whites, and is pretty much the equivalent of a crisp Sauvignon Blanc blended with a well-rounded Chenin Blanc. Perfect for hot days, this is especially good after being chilled in the freezer for a bit.

2. Reckless Red
—————–
Price: R 24.95
This is one of my all time favourite wines, and has a distinct Merlot flavour with just a touch of Pinotage. Juicy, delicious and uber comforting when you’re having one of those days, this is also a prime winter must-drink that goes very well with chocolate, hehe. Also great for braais, parties and just about any other occasion actually.

3. Chenin Blanc Light
—————–
Price: R28.95
This yummy light Chenin Blanc is made by Spier, and is a much lighter option at just 9%. Yes, I am a lightweight sometimes, but there are times I want to enjoy a glass of wine (or two) without thinking about calories or headaches, and this one tastes so divine too, which makes it awesome in my book!

4. Sauvignon Blanc Light
—————–
Price: R29.95
This is another great light wine, for a fresher and zestier option. Also just 9%, making it good for calorie cutting as well as preventing (or minimising) hangovers. Personally, I am starting to prefer my Chenin Blancs to Sauvignon Blancs, but sometimes on a hot Cape summers day, nothing beats an ice cold glass of zestiness!

5. Comtesse Alexia Brut French Champagne
—————–
Price: 225.00
This is a special find indeed, and a very cool alternative to the typical MCC’s we get in these parts. For bubbly devotees like me, it has everything a good bubbly requires – perfectly crisp, delicious sparkle and easy on the palate, plus it is also a lot less sulphary than many MCC’s. The best part? It’s bona fide champagne, imported from France… at the insane price of under R250. It doesn’t get better than that!
