The Big Three Oh

thirty, flirty and thriving

Come Monday, it will be just two months until I hit the big one. While some may find this a scary milestone, I have always wanted to reach this point. Thirty, flirty and thriving just about sums it up for me – and knowing that I’m only just reaching my prime, it’s all rather exciting.

Along this journey I have learned some valuable (and some just plain useful) things…

1. No matter how bad things are, and how much you think you can’t go on, you always can and do get back up again.
2. Family and friends are there to help you, even when you think that you can manage on your own.
3. Living alone is when you really learn to not only take care of yourself, but also to like being in your own company.
4. There will always be something in your life that will be your career, and something that will be your passion.
5. Sometimes you will have to be a bitch – that doesn’t mean you have to be one all the time, but when you have to be, that’s just the way it goes.
6. There is no point in holding grudges against anyone or making enemies – burning bridges is just never a good idea on any account.
7. You can tell a lot about a guy from the way he kisses, but that doesn’t always mean he’ll be good at other things.
8. Anti-wrinkle creams and anti-aging serums do more harm than good, all you really need for good skin is a decent moisturizer, plenty of water and sunscreen.
9. Every person in the world needs at least one friend that they can laugh hysterically with on the phone (especially after a night out, for a hungover post-night rehash, hehe).
10. The ghd is everything it claims to be, and then some and will change your life – regardless of what type of hair you were born with.
11. It really doesn’t matter what people think… if you are happy, and your friends, people who know you love you, that is the only thing that really matters.
12. Giving is every bit (if not more) rewarding then getting. Fact!
13. It’s ok to have bad days, bad weeks, bad months or even bad years; as long as you take them for what they are and look forward to a fresh start following the bad times.
14. Every woman needs a good choice of shoes, dresses and earrings, as well as a good pair of jeans.
15. Perfume can make your day, and it can also make you into a goddess when you need a boost.
16. Living alone, you need to know how to change lightbulbs, deal with cockroaches and cook at least a few basic dishes.
17. Eating healthily is important and makes you feel fantastic, but it’s still ok to eat pizza/chocolate/cake/chips without feeling guilty.
18. If you haven’t gotten around to doing something you dream of doing by the end of your twenties, there’s a good chance of it being a pipe dream.
19. You can care a lot about things without getting emotional and irrational – care enough and you can actually do something rather than sit and cry about the world.
20. Being in love is amazing, and being a fool for love is something we need to allow ourselves to be… no matter how scary it may be out there.
21. It’s also good to be single sometimes, as long as you do it right and put yourself out there to enjoy your life to its full potential.
22. The ones that don’t call you, or cheat on you, or lie to you or hurt you are not worth wasting tears on… in fact they are there to remind us what NOT to do.
23. You can’t win them all – know how to choose your battles, and know when to walk away and when to accept the way things are.
24. Being a worrier, a bit on the A-type side of things, stressing too much, over-reacting or being a drama queen is sometimes something we can’t help.
25. If we can’t love ourselves, warts, wobbly bits and issues and all, how can we ever expect anyone else to love us just the way we are?
26. Having a vice or two makes us human, having several and a booze problem makes us an addict… learn to know where to draw the line.
27. Sometimes staying out until the next day, behaving badly, falling on the stairs at Fiction and losing count of the number of Patron you’ve had is just what you need.
28. But that doesn’t mean you have to do it every weekend, because sometimes being boring and staying at home is also in order.
29. If you haven’t mustered the art of flirting and playing a little bit of the game by the time you hit the end of your twenties, you are losing out on a lot of fun.
30. At the end of the day, most of us lucky middle-class types have everything we really need – which we sometimes confuse with what we want.

So here’s to approaching the thirties with all guns blazing. I’m going to aspire to be a cougar and I’m going to make every minute count. It’s going to be awesome. :-)

Comments:

  1. Rox, you’ll have to put off your cougar status until you hit your 40s and settle for being a puma (a 30 something in training to be a cougar).

I hope you also realise that your list will be very different when you hit 40.

Enjoy your impending 30 something status. Make yourself some of my meatloaf. :)

  2. Partner in Crime says:

I love our post mayhem rehashes and giggles – and of course the dissection of the male species he he

  3. Roxilla says:

@Richard, damn – guess puma will have to do for now. And of course, list was way different at 20 too. Progress is imminent, as is old age.

    @PiC, hahaha – TOTALLY. ;-)

  4. Chantal says:

Hey I’ll be 30 in 3 months time! I find it so surreal, if you met me you’d see why, I am so not an adult :P

Poitn 8 on your list is interesting, why do you think anti-ageing treatments do more damage, I’m inclined to agree, because my mom doesnt use anything and has hardly any wrinkles, and I stopped moisturising at night time years ago and the skin actually balances itself out and hydrates itself (occassionally do need something though) and when I’ve tried using eye creams it seemed to make the wrinkles more noticeable.

  5. Roxilla says:

Haha, I also don’t feel at all like a grown up. ;-)

I used to used those creams in my early 20′s, and also noticed that if anything my skin was more tired. They put so much stuff in those creams, much of it addictive – that when you stop using it, immediately the results (if any) also stop. You are spot on about the skin balancing and hydrating itself too, these days I have a very simple skin care regime – I use those refining scrubs (the Yardley Oatmeal 2 in 1 scrub/mask is awesome!) and Nature’s Kiss moisturizer and Rooibos face mask sometimes and I swear my skin looks better now at almost 30 then it did when I was 22!

Water is also important tho, took me so many years to start drinking proper amounts of water but now I rarely am without a glass at hand.

P.S. Lots of people on the 30 cusp hey, on Saturday night was out at Neighbourhood and our whole table were approaching the big three oh within a few months of each other.

  6. Chantal says:

lol yeah it’s the year of 30, weird how even the bloggers I read are all around our age.

I have loved water since I was really young so thank god I’ve been drinking alot of it forever, the past 8 years or so I’ve drunk at least 1.5l a day, I look young for my age which I think is also from avoiding too much sun, but I have stupid acne scars so its not all good :P

Saw in a post you’re back on the caffeine! awwwww Roxi :P I haven’t had a sip since December but I’m tired of milo now, its fattening, have to find some other hot brown drink….anyways since you like to be healthy and use your juicer alot, try juicing raw broccoli, I have it with a bit of fruit juice and water, broccoli really is the best thing you can consume, it’s amazing.

  7. Rox says:

Oooh, that sounds quite cool – what fruit juice do you use with it?

And ye, also look young for my age… sometimes even get asked for ID at places like Fiction where’s there’s a no under 22 limit, hehehe.

  8. Chantal says:

I just use fruit juice out of a carton :P just to make it a bit more palatable, so not too much, but seriously broccoli is an amazing vegetable, really good against cancer, and did you know per gram it has the same amount of calcium as milk! plus good levels of vitamins.

You lucky fart, I dont think I’ll ever get asked for ID again.

  9. Rox says:

Will have to try power broccoli smoothie soon!

And ye, the ID thing is awesome, hehehe.

  10. Po says:

Oh man. Great post. You sound wise and grown up and full of fun.

I don’t want to think about turning 30, I am not ready to be grown up, it’s happening in less than 6 months. I need to get drunk and forget :)

  11. Roxilla says:

    Hehe, thanks Po. :-)

And hope yours is an awesome one – no one says we have to be grown ups, and I intend to grow old disgracefully. ;-)
