Drive by fish sellers the new KSD

January 23rd, 2010

Not even half as fresh as this

The City Bowl seems to on to something new lately, with less KSD’s and more drive by fish sellers to annoy you on Kloof Street and surrounds. While I can’t say I miss the KSD’s (and besides this, they have not entirely gone) the fish dudes are even more annoying – cruising the streets in dodgy bakkies, they’re like the seafood version of the Long Street drug dealers, except in their case they offer you ‘prawns-vis-crayfish’ rather than ‘mushrooms-ganga-acid’.

Just like the best way to deal with a KSD is to take the tough love ‘fuck off and leave me alone’ approach, so should you deal with the drive by fish people. Of course, they will still follow you and do their best to get you to take a look at their ‘catch’, but since the City Bowl is not Hout Bay harbor, and you don’t want to spend the next day or two on the loo paying for your poor decision to give these dudes the benefit of the doubt, it is advisable to get ignore them and tell them to bugger off.

They do the rounds in the Bo Kaap too, and can often be identified a good few metres away by the wafts of dope smoke coming down the road, which conveniently mask the smell of rotting fish.

The longer I live in this area, the more I realise that it is almost impossible to be shocked anymore by anything you see in the City Bowl – this place is insane, and I love it. :-)
