Mountains: dangerous

Next time take the cable car, dumbass

I honestly don’t know why people make such a big deal about sharks, when something far more dangerous looms over us every single moment here in Cape Town. Table Mountain claims a lot more lives than sharks do each season, and it’s nearly always the tourists too.

Today at lunchtime I read yet another tragic tale of yet another (I can only assume) tourist trying to tackle the mountain. Shame, it was a 60 year old but still, this is why we have the cable car – for tourists to go up the mountain and ooh and aah over the views, and then get safely down again. Locals fall off too of course, but generally it’s the tourists who try to hike up during epic fogs, and get lost and fall over the edge.

It’s horrible, and one of my best friends when I was about four or five had a mother who died this way after being attacked by bees so I have grown up taking our beloved mountain very seriously indeed.

All the same, I think it’s safe to say that swimming at Fish Hoek is far safer than hiking at Platteklip Gorge. ;-)

P.S. Personally, I would still do both… life is for living after all, and I’d rather die doing something fun than get run over or killed by a gun toting hijacker. Just saying!
