Slowly but surely, I am kicking ass and taking names and getting my year on track. It’s a good feeling, and after a bit of a rough start to the year it is great to finally be feeling like I’m on the mend. I had my second chiropractor session today, and this time I was a bit more prepared for the dry needling torture, which made it a bit more bearable. Nevertheless, it’s not the most fun thing to go to the chiro and between the needles, the clicking and the hectic muscle massage/pinching I always feel a bit fragile when I get out of there.
The good news is that it is slowly coming right. Apparently I am still out of alignment but less skew than I was last week – always a good thing. Even better news is that I am able to go back to gym tomorrow! I have to take it slowly, and will stick to the recumbent bike (the one where you sit down to pedal) and the cross trainer or treadmill for walking on no incline. No running for a while, but at least I can do something.
Even more good news is that after some motivation in the form of a little goal tracking tool I came across yesterday, I was able to spend a few hours working on my book. As some of you may know, I started this damn thing a good few years ago. I did all sorts of things wrong though, like going back to edit chapters rather than carrying on, and leaving too long gaps between writing sessions. The book slowly just reached a dead end, and with all the deadlines, stress and whatnot of 2009, it kinda became a proverbial elephant in the room that made me bashful whenever someone asked how it was going. Yesterday, I decided that a fresh year demanded a fresh start, and so the previous draft was left in peace, and a new one was began. This one is more reflective of my influences and style, and rather than being the rather formulaic Dean Koonz style horror that it once was, this one is a rather different beast. With some of my biggest influences and favourite writers including Haruki Murakami, Hunter S. Thompson and Bret Easton Ellis, and a somewhat different tactic of the bad (or maybe just anti-hero) guy being the main character, and the supposed good guys being the baddies, not to mention a weird blend of styles, I’m not sure if this will be a horror… not in the usual sense anyway. This is fine, it will be what it is meant to be.
As for the inspiration lately, I have to say that these two little things have really done wonders for my outlook and I think that both are well-worth having a read and try respectively.
