I know I go about my smoothie maker all the time, but I am just totally loving this awesome machine! I’ve always wanted one but like many things, I just never got around to getting one. When Christmas came along, and we did our annual family ‘secret santa’ thing (instead of getting loads of small and often arb things for the entire family, a few years ago we decided to rather get decent present for just one person, and we get to state what we actually need) I decided to go with a kick-ass smoothie maker.

Super cool glow panel
It’s a Russell Hobbs Glow, and has everything you need and then some. It makes around 4 or 5 large smoothies, and has a tap (naturally), plus mixing stick or cap if you want to use it as a blender. Plus, the cap has a tiny hole in the top and used upside down, it can be used for making mayonnaise or pesto, allowing you to slowly drizzle oil as you blend. It crushes ice, and just about anything else you put into it is juiced within seconds. Best of all, it’s easy to clean – you just throw in some dishwashing liquid and hot water, scrub it out and then open the tap to flush it out, then give it a rinse and leave to air dry. Tres simple!

The fun part: loading it up
As for the smoothies, all I can say is that you can put pretty much anything together, add a few blocks of ice, some water/juice/milk and/or yoghurt and you will end up with a divine smoothie. I’ve tried a number of different mixtures of fruit, and yesterday I added carrots and Rosa tomatoes to apple, passion fruit, nectarine and orange juice for an uber vit-C boost. My favourite things to add though are bananas, strawberries, kiwi, grapes and apple.
Yesterday I did a bit of a detox, and stuck to smoothies, Rooibos and water all day. Soon I will try and do a whole weekend detox, and stock up on lots of fruit and veg to experiment with power smoothies. While I will draw the line at becoming a total juicarian (yes, you actually get people who live on juice!) I think that smoothies are an excellent way to pack in the vitamins and for meal replacements they are the ultimate solution to a carb-heavy meal. Raw food is also loaded with nutrients, so all in all, smoothies are a great way to get my diet sorted!

Sunday blend: apple, banana, passion fruit & OJ
In other kinda related news, I’m going to ask my chiropractor about what exercise I can do. Seriously desperate to get back to gym, and while obviously running is out for now, I’m sure there must be something I can do with this back! *holds thumbs*
‘Tis a good feeling to be slowly getting back on track!
i know the feeling when your body just wants a little tlc and all you want to do is get in motion. i found some tiger balm yesterday i’m hoping it’ll cure the strained archilles, which is taking its own sweet time to mend.
i should take out my blender again and do the smoothie thing – breakfast smoothies!
Sorry to hear that you are in the wars too – after a week of major pain and almost a month of not-too-bad pain, I don’t think I will ever moan about minor things again! Being injured sucks bigtime, can’t wait to get this sorted and get back to normal.
By the way, you may want to try Ice Man – it was originally meant for race horses, herbal cooling gel that works well for temporary relief. You keep it in the fridge and use every half hour or as needed. It costs around R50 bucks or maybe a bit more for a tub, I got mine at Wellness but I hear Clicks has it too.
And breakfast smoothies are the way to go, easiest and yummiest breakfasts ever!
I’ve got the same one, it’s awesome! Funny, I also have the bottles turned to glasses!
Ah cool, nice one! I heart my smoothie maker bigtime, and love my glasses too – got them a few Christmases ago from my mom, my sister got Appletiser bubbly glasses which were also cool!
Did you wash your grapes young lady?
Fruit mix looks amazing….
Wash all fruit, and just in case you were wondering – no guava in there.
