Springing into spring!

It’s just past midnight, and the first of spring is finally upon us. Spring is quite possibly my favourite time of year – everywhere I walk I smell jasmine and other flowers in the air, and the weather is not quite perfect enough to be full summer, but mild enough to make you long for meadows and orchards and blue skies.

It’s also a time of re-invention and change, when the earth and all her inhabitants gear into action. A lot of these changes I’m noticing lately in the city… and maybe in myself, but while some changes are unavoidable, other things never seem to shift at all.

Things that have changed lately…

* My attitude and my views of romance, love and happy endings. Not too long ago I was a bad-ass single chick who thought stuff like this happened to other girls. Now, while I’m not resting on my laurels or getting too carried away just yet, I’m finally relaxing enough to realise how lucky I am have a very special person in my life – it never fails to amaze me what he brings out in me, and I’m completely crazy about this boy.

* First Naked, then Seattle, now Iron Fist… I’m not sure what’s happening to Kloof Street and my surrounding neighbourhood, so many of my favourite places keep shutting down. Still, it’s always awesome and not a day goes by that I don’t look at the palm trees on Park Road, set against the backdrop of the sun and the mountain and marvel at how much I love the city bowl.

* I haven’t had a major hangover for over two months. And you know what, it’s awesome. I’m sure I have a good few parties left in me, and come summer I’ll most likely be causing havoc at Sauls in the wee hours with the best of them, but lately I just don’t really care much about getting drunk or staying out late… just don’t have the stamina or inclination, and it’s actually pretty cool.

Things that will probably never change….

* Gym still plays terrible music and smells like popcorn. It was my first time back in a while, took it fairly easy but was really good to get back into the swing of things. And in case you’re wondering, Zone in Gardens is situated close to the Labia on Lifestyles cinema, popcorn is a good motivating tool… or not. Hmm.

* The Bo Kaap is still awesome. Roosters still crow at all hours of the day, the horses make a racket, the pig and goats escape, the sweet old man still walks up the hill every evening, the kids still skate in the road and the bergies are still living in the derelict mansions at the bottom of the road. It’s comforting somehow, this neighbourhood of mine.

* Wildfire may have moved, but they still do the best ink.
I keep forgetting about it, but I have a new tattoo – three small stars behind my right ear. It felt weird, I could feel the vibrations right through to my teeth, but it wasn’t that sore. It’s almost an anticlimax, I can’t see it so hardly know it’s there. Still, it looks really hot, even my mom likes it. And that’s saying a lot.

Well, I’ve seen in the start of September, and my wine is almost finished. I’m not sure what this month will have in store for me… a lot of big decisions in the works, but all of them herald a new start and a fresh outlook. One things I know, I’m excited to see where where the wind blows me and I’m feeling super positive and optimistic that this month will be full of all things pink, flowery, rose-scented, delicious and fabulous!

Viva le spring, got to love it. :-)
