Not too shabby
I have just across the most incredible documentary, Sharkwater… and I have to get hold of this asap!
In a nutshell, biologist and director Rob Stewart spent a good few years in shark rich areas, researching and filming these amazing animals. He teamed up with eco hero Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd as well, and the result of this journey (which includes pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges) is an amazing look at how the shark is one of natures biggest pillars of evolution, and as more and more sharks become extinct, our future gets more bleak as a planet.

Absolutely breathtaking, phew…
As anyone who knows me will attest, I have been fascinated and awed by sharks pretty much most of my life. It was this love for sharks that steered me to work and volunteer at the Two Oceans Aquarium, and I still to this day dream about sharks. There is something extremely amazing about these creatures that humans will never understand – and slowly we are killing off the world’s shark populations for greed and money.
Shark finning and shark fishing are causing shark numbers to drop as much as 90% a year. Far from the frenzied monsters the media and movies have made sharks out to be, they have more reason to fear us – and as more and more sharks die, we come closer and closer to destroying our ecosystem.
Without sharks, there will be nothing – the role these apex predators play is so intricate and important that we need them to survive.
From the trailer on the Sharkwater homepage, this doccie looks amazing. The video quality is a bit kak, but the footage looks incredible and as this is a subject so close to my heart I am really keen to watch.
As for Rob Stewart, it doesn’t help that he’s not too hard on the eye, and of course he’s totally my kind of guy – in fact, I think Nigel Barker is getting some good competition here for the Marvelous Manly Man recognition. I don’t think there is anything hotter than passion like this, in my book anyway anyone who loves sharks and is doing such amazing work is pretty damn awesome.
Visit the Sharkwater.com website and check it out, and also check out the blog for updates.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch a progamme about killer toads.
The ocean is increadible – have you ever been diving, Roxxxy?
I started my open water, never finished it though! I used to spend ages sitting on top of the roof over the predator exhibit at the aquarium and watch the sharks, so amazing.
Often planned to finish my course, and a friend of mine dives often and has offered to take me down someday… must get my ass into gear and do it!!
Do you dive Dolce?
That’s an insane photograph! Sharks are fantastic animals, but my love goes towards dolphins – there’s something about their intelligence which fascinates me.
I’ll keep my eyes open for a copy of the documentary
I also am fascinated with sharks soo much.
I am also an aquarium junkie. Whenever i see sharks i get a a rush of fear and awe. They command respect.
I so must watch that documentary – i must find it now.
@Chris, dolphins have nothing on sharks – they may do tricks, but sharks can be hypnotized and are far more advanced on the evolution side of things.
@Brazen, they amaze me too! I doubt we will ever really fully understand sharks, been reading some amazing things lately, seriously incredible… and here we are wasting epic numbers to extinction. We should both look out for the doccie, then if one finds it we’ll both know where to get it!
