It’s been yet another balancing act this weekend. As a freelancer, who currently works on a project basis rather than a contract basis, I don’t really have proper working hours at all. I can work two 15 hour days in a row, and have a free day in between, or work a normalish 8-5 week and then work over the weekend as well… it all depends.
So balance is obviously very important to make sure that I don’t overdo things and that my time is spent wisely. Much as work is a huge area of my life, my friends and family are extremely important and going out is vital for my sanity and happiness. I work hard AND I play hard, and as a result my life is full and balanced.
To keep this balance however, I can’t afford to waste any of my precious time. I try my hardest to surround myself with people who add to my life, rather than people who detract. There are two main types of people I spend time with: Friends who I can rely on, and acquaintances I hang out with once in a while. Those who make time and effort to spend time with me are the real friends, and the rest are casual acquaintances who I can see every so often, but don’t really play much of a huge role in things.
This ensures that my good friends get the effort and time they give me, and that I get to use my time as wisely as possible. The same applies with the places I go and the things I do – life is too short to hang out at lame places that you don’t fully enjoy.
Right now, I have the ideal balance in my life, and I’m very lucky to have a great group of friends who add huge value to my life. Overall, life is good – despite the challenges I face, and I look forward to each new day.
