Fighting the good fight
I’ve been a Sea Shepherd fan for some time, and get regular newsletter updates on their current mission, Operation Musashi. As some of you may know, Sea Shepherd is an anti-whaling group, much like Green Peace – except they are a hell of a lot more relentless and other than avoiding violence, they stop at nothing to sabotage the Japanese fleets’ attempts to hunt whales.
The current operation on the Steve Irwin is in full-swing, and so far they have managed to prevent a lot of whaling in illegal waters, especially around the Australian coastline – even in restricted areas. While their main mission is the get in the way as much as possible and keep the whaling fleets from stopping to hunt, they are by no means evil eco-terrorists who put animals first… recently a Japanese whaler was lost at sea, and Sea Shepherd sent messages to the fleet in both English and Japanese to offer their assistance, which was turned down. As a result, the whaler has not been found.
My interest and huge admiration in this courageous group of heroes was further piqued when I happened to read through their crew list… which includes one very hot Dutch cop with martial arts skills and philanthropic nature. It’s really inspiring to read the struggles and victories that this group go through on the seas – this is who the real heroes are, fighting a really good fight and putting themselves directly into the firing line. Awesome stuff indeed.
Anyway, this operation will be screened on Animal Planet as the next Whale Wars season – I really want to get hold of this ultimate reality programme, which is filmed live by the Animal Planet crew from the Steve Irwin during the entire operation.
