I was sitting at my desk earlier, when I suddenly heard a tremendous racket coming from the street. It took a while for the sound to register, but then it hit me – it was the sound of the famous and elusive Bo Kaap ice-cream truck!
This old skool ice-cream van only operates in the Bo Kaap, and as I am technically in the hood, my road is its final route. It only runs in summer, at random times and days, and it is almost impossible to see the damn thing. Only once did I get a glimpse of it, and while it was a bit spooky with its tinted windows and hectically loud horror music blaring from its roof, it is still a great thing to spot the van.
My camera is broken, which really sucks for many, many reasons, but I really hope I get a picture of the ice-cream van soon – it’s such a legendary part of the ghetto!
hahah funny u should mentioned it. I heard it as well and and jogged off to get me some
(seems we dont live far from each other )
I guess they werent kidding when they said it was soft serve as I almost lost my my vanilla and chocolate spiral to the tarmac.
I’ve almost forgotten what softserve was like as I’ve kinda only used the spooned variety (that sentence sounds very dodgy for some reason… spooned.. hmm.. )
Oh wow, you’ve actually seen it properly?!
I have to get out there next time I hear that van, and see for myself!
I’m kinda outta the hood as you put it, so I had to haul ass.
For some reason, i just had to relive the experience, and it’s quite the treat having this ’service’ trolling the neighbourhoods. I just remember nagging me dad to buy from them when they trolled the beach fronts.
as for actually standing back and ‘appreciating’ the van, i was more… fixated..on the cool delights inside.
Man, cape town feels like the center of the sun.
I am going to look out for that van, ‘melt serves’ in summer are awesome. Messy, but good!
The heat has gotten so intense that I feel weird when I DON’T wake up feeling like I’m in a sauna. The fan was on the entire night last night and it was still hot.
Have to make a mission down to Kloof Street this morning, seriously not looking forward to that… missioning up my hill with packets of groceries is not my idea of fun.
