I had a good laugh at the little ad drama that’s been unfolding recently over a Chicken Licken ad which pissed KFC off enough to take them to the ASA… where they then lost the case.

The ad features a Colonel’s son, whose daddy needs a wake up call. The team head off in their kitsch chicken mobile, and the Colonel pronounces the chicken the best around, saying “This here chicken is the tastiest in the land. You won’t just lick your fingers; you’ll be lickin’ your whole hand.” Classic stuff.

I love this ad for a number of reasons, despite not eating chicken. All the ad series (created by Net#work BBDO) are classic, with cheesy themes, that awesome backing track and the cool factor making them some of the best ads I’ve seen lately.

This one takes a playful stab at KFC, which I also get a huge kick out of, because I cannot stand KFC. Not only do they have gross, greasy food, but they are probably as famous for their awful chicken treatment than they are for their junk food. Because of the size of their industry, the focus is on mass-production… which means cost-saving and short-cuts all the way, sadly at the expense of the millions of chickens who are forced into battery farming hell for the sake of a KFC nugget.

So with all this in mind, the fact that Chicken Licken took on this corporate giant and won makes me smile hard every time I see that ad. Poetic justice or freedom of speech, whatever the case it’s a clear KFC fail.
