The wheels on the bike go round and round…

November 19th, 2008

There’s an awesome new meme going around, about bicycles… find out more over at Guy McLaren, but the aim of the game is to share our earliest memories of pedal power.

I was tagged by ExMi on this, who I was somewhat relieved to read shares my lack of cycling ability – I thought I was one of the only people who can’t ride a bike, phew.

Anyway, so. My earliest bike memories…

I had a pink girl version of BMX, with training wheels. I used to love that bike, and was happy to ride around in the street. I just couldn’t handle it without the wheels though, and couldn’t quite work up the effort or patience to get used to it. So it ended up gathering dust until my parents got rid of it.

My sister was into bikes, she had a boy’s BMX and rocked it bigtime. My cousin always had bikes, and made some valiant attempts to teach me when I was a teenager, it didn’t really catch on with me though.

My best bike memories are of my high school boyfriend, who used to transport me around on his handlebars. I fell off a few times, once face first into the dirt, but mostly we somehow managed to get around like this until he got a scooter.

The scooter was awesome… it doesn’t quite count as a bicycle I know, but I have some good memories of that little thing too. Cruising from Bergvliet at 1am in the freezing cold winter, clinging to the ex-bf and freezing my ass off… trying to learn how to ride it and crashing it into a tree (not badly enough to hurt anyone or damage anything, just my ego, lol)… the feeling of the sun and wind in my face… man it was awesome.

Now my only bike experiences are of the stationary type. I have the most awesome little exercise bike ever, with loads of settings and stuff. The seat leans towards the uncomfortable side, but overall it’s a damn good little bike for it’s relatively low price.

So, those are my bike memories – now it’s time to hear yours…

I tag Christopher J Combrink, because I know he’s just itching to talk about his hardcore peninsula cycle sessions, 302 because I can picture him elegantly cruising down a country road, Blade because the thought of him in bike helmet is very funny, and Louisa because I’m sure she has a bike memory or two. You guys then need to tag more people to get the word out there for this good cause. :-)

But wait, there’s more….

Guy will be biking around South Africa for 12 months (a year, 365 days, 12 whole months!) to raise money for charity. You can read about his ventures over at Pedal for Charity, and there are a number of ways to get involved from donations to blogging, Tweets, Facebook fans and more.

Please go on over and have a read, it’s not often that everyday heroes like this come along to make a difference, and he deserves all the support we can give him!
