5 Awesome Things About SA’s Environment

October 7th, 2008

[VIA National Geographic]

A friend of mine sent me a really great factsheet compiled by SA Good News – lots of good news indeed so will be posting bits throughout the month.

Kicking off, here are 5 cool things about our wonderfully diverse environment:

1. The Kruger National Park supports the greatest variety of wildlife species on the African continent
2. The Cango Caves near Oudsthoorn is the world’s longest underground cave sequence
3. South Africa is the only country to house an entire floral kingdom (fynbos), one of only 6 on the planet
4. In 1991, South Africa became the first country in the world to protect the Great White shark
5. The Cape Hyrax’s (better known as the Dassie*) closest relative is the African elephant

Talking of white sharks, I managed to watch some of Be The Creature on Sunday before I went to the theater dinner evening, and they were checking out great whites. It was seriously brilliant, man I wish I could be a Kratt brother!

So there you have it, 5 good reasons to feel good about South Africa this morning.

* I know someone who has a few other facts about Dassies… ;-)
