Small mercies…

September 8th, 2008

Much as our wonderful country is a bit of a mess, and our government is corrupt and incompetent a lot of the time, never am I more grateful that I live in this place than I am when I read about the US presidential campaign.

I was rooting for Hilary mostly because it would have been awesome to see a woman in power, but also because I totally believe in a liberal, democratic society, and the very nature of the Republican gun toting anti-choice, anti-environment, pro-hunting and total right wing militant scare tactics vibe is totally not how I want to live.

Charming, nothing says style like a dead animal around your neck

Being something of an animal rights activist, I am also very much not impressed with the Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, who is a massive trophy hunter, supports areal wolf hunts and fur-lover of note. Hearing her slam every good thing that Obama stands for, like change and peace, and seeing her posing with dead grizzlies, as well as dead moose, I have to marvel how we can live on the same planet, yet some people can be so far removed from things.

Of course, she’s just a ‘trophy candidate’ as many have said – the McCain factor know full well that having a woman representing on their side will get them a lot of kudos. McCain is also just a mouth piece too, and the people who really stand to gain from having someone worse than Bush in power will be happy as long as they are still making their money and controlling their oil stocks.

All of this just makes me really appreciate that no matter how shit we have it, at least we don’t have maniacs like that controlling our country.
