A Bit More On Seals…

There are no words to sum this up. None at all.

Despite the fact that it made me unbearably upset and ashamed to be part of the human race, I just watched the Canadian Seal Hunt video. I didn’t want to, but then I realised that we need to see just how horrific these things are to feel angry and shocked enough to really want to change things.

The seal ‘hunt’ is something a little close to home for me, as I used to volunteer at the Two Oceans Aquarium as a Seal Trainer for a year or so. Working with those seals there, even if they were just boring old Cape Fur Seals, gave me an insight into what smart, dog-like and perceptive animals seals are.

During my time at the Aquarium a rescued seal pup was brought in, who was about 3 or 4 days old. The first day he was brought in, all he would do was shuffle up and down the corridor of the Aquarist section and cry. If anyone picked him up, he would instantly try and suck your arm, hand, or anything else he could get close to. He had to be tube fed with a special solution, and he was there for about a week until he was taken to a zoo where they could keep him, but sadly he died a few days after getting there, as he was just too small to have been separated from his mother.

I didn’t intend on pulling a boo-hoo story here, but watching that video brought back so many feelings and thoughts…. from the National Geographic documentary I was watching on Sunday about Arctic Ring and Harp seals, to my four incredible seals I worked with at the Aquarium (who each had such strong, distinct personalities and characters), to that little pup that tried so hard, despite his non-existent odds… and of course the overwhelming feeling of not understanding how these sealers can do what they do, and kill over 300,000 seal pups a year as if they were nothing more than bits of junk that had to be squashed.

And as for the people who wear the fur – I just don’t understand how they just can’t see the reality of fur, it just doesn’t make sense to me all, no matter how nice it feels or how en vogue it is… I just don’t understand.

God, this all just gets to me so much.
