More Facebook Shenanigans…

December 25th, 2007

Had to have a bit of a snigger when I saw this story on News24 just now.

Basically, a couple of little punks in the U.S have made a fake Facebook page for a teacher, complete with his first and last name and a phony pedophile admission to really throw said teacher in the poo. This alone makes for a good read, but of course this being a little yank drama, it gets way more interesting…

You see, the school officials suspended these dudes for the maximum period of 90 days, and they had served 10 of these and are meant to serve the rest of the suspension when schools go back in January. Naturally, as Americans, they decided to fight for their right to sue. Yes, sue. These kids are suing the school, and claiming that the fake profile was a ‘parody’ and that therefore they shouldn’t be suspended. As the school district don’t find the joke as funny as the kids did, they opted to take them to court.

“They argue that the Facebook entry should be considered protected speech because it was parody. The plaintiffs also allege the district overstepped its bounds because the web page was created away from school with access limited to seven people, their lawyer said.”

Good Christmas evening entertainment aside, I was just thinking how often I’ve been reading about yet another little drama somehow involving Facebook, even if it’s not directly targeted at them, still funny how much bad rep they’ve had lately.

Oh well, makes for good reading anyhow.
